SPI and BBright: a year of Ultra HD playout for FUNBOX UHD channel

SPI’s FUNBOX UHD channel has been using BBright Ultra HD baseband playout solution since September 2016

BBright has proven daily its software-based video processing technology for 24/7 usage by broadcasters, premium TV channels and content owners. More specifically, BBright UHD-24/7 appliance has been the constant source of playout for the FUNBOX UHD channel which is broadcast by SPI International.

FunBox UHD is a global general entertainment channel broadcast in Ultra HD quality. It features compelling primetime programming including documentaries on nature, wildlife, society, music videos, sports, arts and culture, lifestyle content and more.

From its operational hub in Warsaw, Poland, SPI International manages the entire FUNBOX Ultra HD playout operation from pivot file format generation (in HEVC), to content ingest, channel schedule management and traffic file ingest into the playout server. The FUNBOX UHD channel is then routed to Eutelsat for satellite uplink on HOTBIRD.

Marcin Kowalski, SPI’s CTO, explained: “The ease of operation in a simplified and single HEVC workflow, applicable both for playout and VOD, has been a key decision factor in the adoption of the BBright playout solution. Moreover, BBright provides efficient technical support and fast reaction time.”

Guillaume Arthuis, BBright CEO, also commented: “We are very thankful to SPI International for having taken the lead in adopting new technology in this new Ultra HD era. This past year of cooperation has been fruitful for both companies and cemented the base for a long-term partnership most likely to involve additional UHD channels in the future.”
