Why Broadcasters Are Accelerating the Shift from Satellite to IP Distribution

Broadcasters are modernizing aging satellite infrastructures with IP-based workflows that reduce hardware complexity, improve security and create a more flexible path to cloud and WAN distribution.

Broadcasters are under increasing pressure to modernize legacy satellite infrastructures while maintaining the reliability and operational simplicity that live production and distribution demand. Aging IRD-heavy architectures, rising operational costs, increasing security requirements and the need for greater workflow flexibility are accelerating the transition from traditional satellite-centric operations toward IP-based distribution models.

For many broadcasters, the challenge is not whether to migrate from satellite to IP, but how to do it without introducing additional complexity. The Appear X Platform has emerged as a leading solution for organizations seeking to simplify this transition while preparing for more dynamic cloud and WAN-connected workflows.

Appear’s approach replaces fragmented infrastructures built around multiple IRDs, RF routing systems and isolated control points with a centralized Satellite-to-IP architecture. By consolidating satellite reception and demodulation into a unified platform, broadcasters can significantly reduce hardware sprawl, lower power and cooling requirements, simplify operations and create a cleaner pathway toward flexible IP distribution.

The migration benefits are substantial. Broadcasters can centralize satellite demodulation at a small number of earth stations using high-density Appear X Platform demodulators, then securely distribute content over WAN or public internet networks using SRT or TSoIP. The result is a modern IP distribution fabric that supports more agile workflows while reducing operational burden.

NBCUniversal’s award-winning deployment is one of the clearest examples of this transformation in practice. In 2025, Appear and NBCUniversal received the NAB Show Delivery Project of the Year award for modernizing NBCUniversal’s satellite reception operations using the X Platform. The project replaced fragmented, hardware-heavy workflows with a centralized, scalable and cloud-compatible satellite downlink ecosystem. NBCUniversal achieved a 200% density improvement at edge sites, streamlined infrastructure footprint and laid the foundation for future IP and cloud-native workflows.

At the same time, organizations beyond Tier-1 broadcasters are realizing the benefits of IP-based distribution. World Archery transitioned from expensive and complex satellite and fibre contribution workflows toward a fully IP-based production model using Appear’s SRT-enabled X20 platform. The federation gained more operational control, improved video quality and lower ongoing costs, achieving return on investment within just 18 months.

Security has also become a major buying trigger in the transition to IP. Broadcasters increasingly need more sophisticated content protection strategies as workflows become distributed across multiple facilities and networks. Appear addresses this challenge with integrated media firewall functionality, secure SRT transport and BISS-CA addressable encryption. In 2025, PSSI expanded its deployment of Appear X20 chassis, SRT modules and encryption capabilities to modernize contribution and content protection together as it evolved beyond legacy satellite-only workflows.

The move toward IP distribution is also creating new partnership opportunities across the industry. Appear’s collaboration with LTN combines the density and reliability of the X Platform with LTN’s fully managed global IP network and orchestration platform. Together, the solution enables broadcasters to securely transport premium live event feeds with centralized orchestration, redundancy and service assurance.

Another key advantage is operational efficiency. Traditional satellite distribution often requires multiple standalone IRDs, RF splitters and routing systems at each affiliate site. Appear’s unified platform dramatically reduces those operational touchpoints while simplifying affiliate onboarding and deployment. The platform’s FPGA-accelerated SRT gateway modules can support up to 6 Gbit/s and 128 SRT flows per module, offering a dense and highly scalable alternative to software-based gateway approaches.

Satellite to IP migration is no longer simply a technology refresh. It is becoming a strategic operational shift that allows broadcasters to modernize content protection, simplify teleports and trucks, reduce hardware complexity and create a more flexible distribution architecture for the future. By centralizing demodulation, securely routing content over IP and enabling seamless integration with cloud and hybrid workflows, the Appear X Platform is helping broadcasters build the next generation of live media distribution.
