Japanese NHK’s international channel expands reach in Germany through waipu.tv launch

NHK World-Japan, the international service of Japan’s public media organization NHK, is expanding its presence in Germany through its launch on waipu.tv.

Starting from January 15, 2024, the 24-hour service will be available on the waipu.tv platform, accessible to all waipu.tv subscribers. This marks the first Japanese service on the platform, diversifying the channel offerings provided by waipu.tv.

Jun Takao, CEO of Japan International Broadcasting (JIB), the NHK subsidiary responsible for its international service’s global distribution, expressed, “Today marks a very important day for us. With waipu.tv, we found a partner that will help us make NHK World-Japan even more accessible across Germany. We are excited about the launch and look forward to a successful partnership.”

Susanne Thierer, Head of Content at waipu.tv, added, “Our aim is to offer relevant channels and content for every customer. The inclusion of NHK is an exciting addition to this variety and gives our customers an insight into Japanese culture and its views on the world.”

NHK international broadcast channel offers a 24/7 service, featuring hourly live international news from Tokyo and news bureaus around the world, as well as programs covering Japanese society, politics, science, culture, history, food, and lifestyle.
