Broadcast Solutions and NEP Germany boost remote production for Dyn Media

Broadcast Solutions, a media systems integration group in Europe, has collaborated with NEP Germany to design and implement an innovative remote production environment for the new sports network, Dyn Media. NEP Germany will manage this setup for Dyn.

Dyn Media, created by Christian Seifert, former CEO of the Bundesliga (German football league), in partnership with major publisher Axel Springer, aims to become a media hub for German sports fans beyond soccer. The platform covers sports such as basketball, handball, volleyball, and table tennis, emphasizing the “No frills; no pretence; just the power of sport” mantra. The streaming platform seeks to elevate the awareness and appreciation of these sports through high-quality production standards. NEP Germany is the production service provider for all basketball and handball league games for Dyn.

The coverage relies heavily on remote production. In collaboration with NEP Germany, Broadcast Solutions has developed six compact units known as venue kits. Each kit includes a core rack in a flight case with three stage boxes connected via fiber. These kits typically accommodate six cameras, minicams, microphones, and other audio sources, all utilizing SMPTE ST 2110 standard equipment.

This streamlined setup enables the entire outside broadcast system to fit into a single VW Crafter van, and it can be set up and operated by a small team on-site. This approach not only offers cost-effective coverage but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the operation.

All signals are routed to NEP Germany’s headquarters in Munich, where Broadcast Solutions has established two large control rooms equipped with Grass Valley Kula switchers, a central equipment room, and a network operation center (NOC) responsible for managing signal transmission from all arenas to Cologne, as well as to the cloud and OTT platforms.

The NOC allows flexible allocation of venue kits to the production control rooms in Cologne and Munich, with several Riedel Simplylive Production Suites serving as production control systems for smaller productions or as replay facilities.

Audio in the venues is remotely controlled from sound quality control (SQC) rooms, and the normalized signals are then sent to the production control rooms. Dyn has the option to send commentators to the event, or they can utilize voiceover rooms as part of the new facilities for off-the-tube commentary. Audio mixing primarily employs the Prodigy from DirectOut Technologies.

Dyn Media is headquartered in Cologne, and NEP Germany and Broadcast Solutions have also designed and built one large gallery and three small control rooms in this location, along with the associated audio facilities. These facilities share the hardware installed in Munich, allowing Dyn to place its editorial team in either city while maintaining the same functionality, controlling capital costs, and minimizing energy consumption.

NEP Germany and Broadcast Solutions collaborated on designing the entire system, with Broadcast Solutions taking full responsibility for installation and commissioning in both Munich and Cologne, covering not just audio and video equipment, but also the entire facility, including air conditioning, fire protection, UPS, and backup generators. The six venue kits were constructed in Broadcast Solutions’ workshops in Bingen.

Zlatan Gavran, Managing Director of NEP Germany, stated, “Dyn Media was eager to begin distributing its live sports content using an innovative, fresh approach. They entrusted us with their entire technical operations, and we needed to work with a systems integrator that understood these complex and forward-looking requirements. Broadcast Solutions proved to be the perfect partner, and we collaborated on a design that was practical, resilient, and cost-effective.”

Rainer Kampe, CTO of Broadcast Solutions, added, “This was a very exciting project, with the added challenge of a very tight timescale. We had our first conversations at IBC in 2022, and we knew that we had to design and build a completely fresh approach to remote production, and have it ready to go on air in the summer of 2023. NEP Germany is an excellent partner, and we are very proud indeed to have played our part in the launch of Dyn Media.”
