Haivision’s IP and bonded cellular solutions empower live broadcast of TCS New York City Marathon

Haivision, a global provider of mission-critical, real-time video networking and visual collaboration solutions, has announced that its video solutions played a vital role in ensuring the successful broadcast of the TCS New York City Marathon held in November.

The annual event, boasting over 51,000 racers traversing all five boroughs of New York City, garners a massive live viewership both nationally and internationally through a network of global broadcast partners.

Live production experts at CP Communications harnessed Haivision’s mobile video transmitters to guarantee the flawless delivery of high-quality, low-latency race coverage over 4G and 5G cellular networks. Haivision’s Pro460 mobile video transmitters were strategically placed in smart cars to closely follow the leaders of the men’s, women’s, and wheelchair races, while transmitters were deployed on electric bikes to capture live broadcasts of the main race. Additionally, CP utilized Haivision StreamHub receivers in their production trucks for distribution to rightsholders. Notably, one StreamHub instance operated in the cloud, serving as a quality control hub for all live camera feeds broadcasted to viewers via the official marathon app.

In addition to the mobile video transmitters and receivers, CP Communications also incorporated Haivision Makito X4 video encoders and Makito X4 video decoders at the start and finish lines. These devices transmitted return and program feeds via SRT to the production truck for monitoring. These video feeds also served security surveillance purposes for the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority during the race. In total, CP Communications established four on-site venues and three remote production sites employing Haivision’s video contribution solutions to cover the entire 26.2-mile race.

Frank Rafka, Technical Manager at CP Communications, commented, “As long-time users of Haivision products, we have confidence in the quality, reliability, and low latency they offer for live events. The flexibility of Haivision’s mobile transmitters allows us to maintain exceptional picture quality, even when data rates fluctuate. Moreover, these solutions seamlessly integrate, enhancing our workflow from the get-go.”

Marcus Schioler, Vice President of Marketing at Haivision, expressed, “Haivision is proud to have played a role in one of New York City’s most anticipated and iconic sporting events. The successful production of a marathon underscores how Haivision’s mobile transmitters can excel in the most challenging conditions, reliably delivering live video over any network to provide audiences with an exceptional viewing experience.”
