HbbTV symposium and Awards 2023 showcase DVB-I and TA driving HbbTV services

The 11th HbbTV Symposium and Awards, hosted in Naples on November 28 and 29, 2023, highlighted the pivotal role of DVB-I and Targeted Advertising (TA) in elevating HbbTV’s significance for broadcasters and platform operators. The event, co-hosted by the HbbTV Association and Italian digital TV association Comunicare Digitale, drew over 220 participants from Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia, marking it as one of the most attended gatherings in its 12-year history.

Key takeaways from the symposium include the assertion that the open HbbTV standard, particularly with the HbbTV-TA specification, offers a universal solution to broadcasters and the advertising industry operating on smart TVs from various manufacturers. The integration of DVB-I and TA is not only fostering next-generation applications but also emerging as a driver for new revenue sources.

The symposium featured informative keynotes, panel presentations, and roundtables updating attendees on market figures, deployments, and specification developments. With a focus on new services, industry trends, and challenges, the second day introduced the HbbTV unconference. This interactive session allowed participants to shape discussions and conclusions by pitching sessions on topics of personal interest.

Simultaneously, the event hosted the 6th edition of the HbbTV Awards, recognizing excellence and best practices within the HbbTV community across five categories.

Looking ahead, the 12th HbbTV Symposium and Awards are scheduled for November 2024 in London, UK, co-hosted by the HbbTV Association and Everyone TV (BBC/ITV/Channel 4/Channel 5).
