Magewell introduces new rackmount IP conversion family

Magewell has been at the forefront of assisting production and AV experts in bridging traditional and IP-based media workflows with their solutions for signal and stream conversion, as the company states. The company’s latest offering, the Modator family, is said to represents a significant step forward, bringing the reliability and low-latency performance of their standalone encoders and decoders into a high-density, modular, rackmount format.

The Modator family will be showcased for the first time in Magewell’s booth (C6816) at the 2024 NAB Show, scheduled to take place from April 14-17 in Las Vegas.

This newly introduced Modator 2U chassis is specifically designed to seamlessly integrate into standard rack deployments, accommodating up to 10 modules. Users have the flexibility to configure frame network settings and monitor chassis and module statuses via the integrated 4.8-inch LED touchscreen or the browser-based web interface, product’s specifications states. With dual power supplies and optimized heat dissipation, the system ensures reliable 24/7 operation, as the company afirms.

Each of the hot-swappable Modator modules offers independent network connectivity and can efficiently convert between baseband video/audio signals and IP streams, according to the manufacturer. Moreover, every module features its own web-based management interface. Additionally, the Modator 2U frame and each installed module can be centrally configured, controlled, and monitored through Magewell’s optional Control Hub management software.

The initial lineup of Modator modules includes support for NDI® video connectivity technology. The first four modules comprise:

– Pro Convert HDMI Plus Module: Converts HDMI input signals into high-definition IP streams in the NDI High Bandwidth format.
– Pro Convert HDMI 4K Plus Module: Encodes HDMI input signals into NDI High Bandwidth at up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.
– Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI Module: Decodes IP streams up to 2560×1440 resolution in various formats, delivering HDMI output.
– Pro Convert for NDI to AIO Module: Offers the same decoding features as the Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI Module, with simultaneous HDMI and SDI outputs up to 1080p60.

James Liu, VP of Engineering at Magewell, emphasized the importance of scalability in addressing the growing demand for IP-based production and distribution deployments. He stated, “As IP-based production and distribution deployments continue to grow in scale, customers often want a higher-density form factor for greater space efficiency. The new Modator series delivers our hallmark reliability and low-latency performance in a scalable solution that addresses this need.”

The Modator 2U chassis and the initial series of modules are expected to be available for shipping before June, 2024.
