MainConcept launches easy video API for seamless hardware codec support

MainConcept, a company that specializes in providing video and audio codecs, has unveiled the MainConcept Easy Video API (EVA), a unified API simplifying the utilization of both software and hardware codecs. Developed in collaboration with AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA, and optimized for their respective GPUs, MainConcept EVA aims to empower producers and broadcasters by harnessing the advantages of software and hardware encoders and decoders in their workflows.

Representing a significant advancement in video workflow management, MainConcept EVA grants developers access to the superior quality and enhanced feature sets of leading CPU-based software encoders, while also capitalizing on GPU codecs’ superior processing performance and energy efficiency with AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1. Through partnerships with major technology providers like AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA, MainConcept EVA enables multi-platform users to seamlessly integrate AMD AMF (Advanced Media Framework) SDKs, Intel Quick Sync Video (via Intel Video Processing Library (Intel VPL)), and NVIDIA NVENC and NVDEC in a more streamlined manner.

Deacon Johnson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of MainConcept, remarked, “For years, developers have navigated the landscape of multiple software and hardware APIs across different vendors, which has generally functioned well. However, now they have the option to streamline their workflows further by utilizing just one API. In collaboration with AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA, MainConcept Easy Video API empowers developers using software codecs for AVC, HEVC, and AV1, along with GPUs from these companies, to benefit from a unified interface and all the associated advantages.”

According to the company, key benefits of MainConcept EVA include:

– One SDK with a single API, saving time (up to 75% faster) and budget.
– Flexibility to choose GPUs from AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA.
– Energy consumption reduction with more power-efficient GPUs.
– Extended codec features for improved quality and professional formats (including 10-bit 4:2:2) using MainConcept software libraries.
– Functionality to detect hardware availability and codec capabilities.
– Single point of contact for development support.
– Same API for multi-platform Windows and Linux, for on-premises and cloud deployment.

MainConcept EVA is tailored to meet the demands of modern video workflows, providing a single API to access GPU-based libraries alongside MainConcept’s extensive software offerings, in the company’s words.

The MainConcept Easy Video API will be available for trial and purchase with Codec SDK 15.0, a major update to the company’s comprehensive codec offerings, at NAB Show 2024 in Las Vegas at booth W3743.
