Nevion expands Virtuoso’s audio and video processing capabilities

Nevion, a Sony Group Company specialized in virtualized media production solutions, has recently announced the enhancement of its software-defined media node Virtuoso with upgraded signal processing features, including a new audio interface and additional up/down/cross conversion (UDC) functionality. These enhancements aim to augment Virtuoso’s versatility for live production applications, whether in outside broadcast scenarios or as part of centralized processing infrastructure for studio, production control room, or master control room operations.

Virtuoso, a core element of Sony’s Networked Live offering, it’s said to have gained widespread adoption globally for its ability to transport, process, and monitor signals in real-time.

In terms of audio capabilities, Virtuoso already boasts bidirectional AES3, MADI, and SMPTE ST 2110 / AES67 IP audio interfacing, along with various processing features like monitoring, routing, embedding, mixing, and control of polarity, gain, and delay. The new RPRO interface, tailored for remote production applications, now allows Virtuoso to handle mixed digital and analog audio signals, along with GPIO and sync distribution.

Regarding video processing, Virtuoso’s UDC capability provides a range of high-quality format conversions for HD and UHD with native SMPTE ST 2110-20 uncompressed video input/output. The existing functionality includes de-interlacing, scaling, HDR/SDR conversion, legalization, frame synchronization, and delay. Newly added features include frame rate conversion and configurable 3D LUTs for color space conversion.

Furthermore, the latest release of Virtuoso introduces further enhancements to the JPEG-XS in TS (TR-07) capability, initially announced at NAB 2023, enabling seamless handling of IP-in/IP-out workflows.

Steve Hard, VP of Product Management, Virtuoso at Nevion, comments on the updates, stating, “Nevion Virtuoso is well-regarded for its media transport capabilities, but its media processing features are equally exceptional. These latest enhancements further solidify Virtuoso’s position as a top performer for in-facilities and outside broadcast applications.”

Attendees of the NABShow (Las Vegas, April 14-17, 2024) will be able to explore Nevion’s Virtuoso at the Networked Live area within Sony’s booth C8201.
