Rohde & Schwarz to showcase the maturity of 5G broadcast at Mobile World Congress 2024

Rohde & Schwarz, a key player in the audiovisual production and broadcast industry, is set to demonstrate the readiness of 5G Broadcast as a revenue-generating technology at the Mobile World Congress 2024. Visitors can experience this complete ecosystem at the Rohde & Schwarz booth (Stand 5A80) in Fira Gran Via Barcelona from February 26th to 29th.

5G Broadcast, a one-to-many transmission standard within the 3GPP specifications, presents new avenues for both media and data transmission. It excels in broadcasting live content to a multitude of mobile devices simultaneously, offering the flexibility for pop-up channels at events like sports and music festivals. One notable feature is its ability to deliver media broadcasts to compatible mobile devices without the need for a SIM card. Additionally, 5G Broadcast supports data broadcasting, making it a suitable choice for updating IoT devices and automotive applications.

Rohde & Schwarz has played a pivotal role in standardizing this technology, collaborating with organizations such as ETSI JTC Broadcast and 5G-MAG, thus securing the ITU’s endorsement of 5G Broadcast as a next-generation DTT standard on a global scale. This endorsement leads to more efficient utilization of the UHF band, contributing to a sustainable and environmentally conscious future for the industry.

After extensive real-world demonstrations and proofs of concept, the end-to-end solution is now ready for commercialization, attracting interest from network operators and content providers worldwide. Thomas Janner, Director of R&D Broadcast Applications at Rohde & Schwarz, emphasized the simplicity of integrating 5G Broadcast into existing networks, stating, “For operators of networks, adding 5G Broadcast is a simple upgrade to Rohde & Schwarz transmitters. It offers a practical and cost-effective solution for achieving true mobile television without increasing network congestion. Moreover, the technology opens up vast opportunities for data delivery services, especially in parallel with television broadcasting, addressing the growing needs of automotive and IoT sectors.”

Visitors to the Mobile World Congress can expect informative presentations at the Rohde & Schwarz booth, as well as the opportunity to witness a live demonstration at the company’s headquarters in Munich. These demonstrations will highlight the comprehensive ecosystem in place, thanks to collaborations with key industry players and standardization bodies, confirming that 5G Broadcast is ready for immediate commercial deployment.

Visitors will find Rohde & Schwarz at Stand 5A80 at the Mobile World Congress.
