Rohde & Schwarz, Viavi support European OTIC in Berlin for O-RAN conformance certification, spearheaded by Deutsche Telekom

Rohde & Schwarz and Viavi Solutions, Inc. have played a pivotal role in facilitating O-RAN conformance certification at the European Open Testing and Integration Centre (OTIC) in Berlin. Hosted at the Deutsche Telekom innovation campus and managed by i14y Lab, the OTIC is committed to delivering top-notch testing services for O-RAN-based products and solutions, alongside validation and integration services for a diverse array of open radio access network vendors.

In a significant milestone, i14y Lab recently completed its first successful certification of an O-RAN radio unit (O-RU) in accordance with O-RAN Alliance (O-RAN) standards as part of the O-RAN Certification and Badging Program. This achievement underscores the efficiency and reliability of the integrated solution for O-RU conformance testing provided by Rohde & Schwarz and Viavi.

The successful certification was awarded to an indoor O-RU from the LPRU-series developed by VVDN Technologies. The rigorous certification process adhered to the meticulously defined processes and procedures outlined by the O-RAN Alliance, marking a significant milestone as the first certification accomplished by a European test lab.

The i14y Lab serves as an open facility for interoperability testing of disaggregated telco systems, particularly open RAN, spearheaded by Deutsche Telekom in collaboration with consortium partners. Rohde & Schwarz is among the consortium members and offers an integrated solution for O-RAN Radio Units conformance testing in partnership with Viavi Solutions. Leveraging their combined expertise, the solution comprises the Viavi TM500 O-RU Tester, R&S SMBV100A vector signal generator (VSG), R&S FSVA3000 signal and spectrum analyzer, and Vector Signal Explorer (R&S VSE) software from Viavi TM500. The O-RU Test Manager from Viavi serves as the single point of control, ensuring a seamless user experience.

All approved Open Testing and Integration Centers (OTIC) globally collaborate with the O-RAN Alliance in the O-RAN Certification and Badging Program, which serves as a robust mechanism to instill confidence in O-RAN solutions within the industry. O-RAN’s open, disaggregated, and flexible approach to radio access networks has spurred rapid advancement and growth in the technology ecosystem, fostering innovation, meeting individual needs, and enhancing network efficiency.

VVDN Technologies has developed the LPRU-series 5G NR Radio Units (O-RU) to comply fully with O-RAN Alliance standards. These radios cover 5G NR TDD bands n77, N78, and n79, offering compact, lightweight, and easy-to-install solutions with optimal coverage for indoor applications. Extensive compliance testing has validated the design against 3GPP and O-RAN standards.

The O-RU verification process followed the O-RAN fronthaul conformance test specification defined by O-RAN WG4, covering the Control, User, and Synchronization plane (CUS-Plane) and the Management-plane (M-Plane). WG4 aims to deliver open fronthaul interfaces facilitating interoperability between Distributed Unit (DU) and Radio Unit (RU) from multiple vendors.
