SMPTE introduces new Student Chapter at Barnard College

In a pioneering move within the realm of media technology, SMPTE®, the esteemed community of media professionals, technologists, and engineers, has officially declared the establishment of a groundbreaking SMPTE Student Chapter at Barnard College. This historic development represents the inception of the very first SMPTE Student Chapter at a Seven Sisters’ College.

Barnard College, an all-women’s institution and a member of the Seven Sisters, a consortium of historic liberal arts colleges designed to offer women an education equivalent to that of traditionally all-male Ivy League institutions, is currently engaged in a collaborative partnership with Columbia University.

Membership in the Barnard SMPTE Student Chapter grants each student access to a SMPTE student membership, opening doors to discounted events, including the highly anticipated 2024 SMPTE Media Technology Summit. Additionally, members will enjoy complimentary access to all SMPTE standards and independent study courses.

SMPTE Executive Director David Grindle stated, “We are thrilled to welcome Barnard College to the SMPTE family. SMPTE is committed to fostering diversity within the media tech workforce, and this initiative aims to provide STEM-inclined students with avenues to propel their careers forward.”

This initiative not only marks a significant stride in SMPTE’s commitment to inclusivity but also underscores the growing recognition of the intersection between liberal arts education and the dynamic field of media technology.
