Robin (Jack) Whyte has been named CTO of the BBC. He takes on the role one year after Peter O’Kane announced that he would step down from the position at the end of 2025, after 15 years at the public broadcaster.“I’m therefore taking on this responsibility with a deep sense of purpose and humility,” he states in a message shared on his LinkedIn profile.
“Over the many years I’ve worked in tech, I’ve been lucky enough to meet and work with some truly exceptional people, and the BBC is no exception. I am reminded daily just how special this organisation is; the talent and passion of its people are remarkable,” he adds.
Whyte is a senior product and software engineering executive with extensive experience leading product, engineering, and community teams.
He joined the BBC three years ago as Director of Engineering & Data. Prior to this, he was Global SVP of Engineering at Anaplan.
He has also held several leadership roles, including Director of Product and Development for eBay Europe, Executive Director of Product at Linden Lab, and Director of Product at LGO1 Ltd, a company he founded in 2000 to develop data analysis software and provide consultancy services. The company joined Linden Lab in 2005.
“I’m therefore taking on this responsibility with a deep sense of purpose and humility. While our content is rightly recognised as world-class, our technology must be every bit as exceptional, and I’m excited to be part of that story,” he concluded in his post.
