At IBC 2024 in Amsterdam, stYpe, a global leader in virtual studio technology, introduced two major innovations: AI Glue and StypeCentral, both designed to push the boundaries of broadcast production. These advancements cater specifically to virtual studio and augmented reality (AR) workflows, which are of particular interest to broadcast engineers, producers, and directors aiming to enhance their content with cutting-edge technology.
AI glue: precision talent tracking for virtual sets
AI Glue, a new tracking system unveiled by stYpe, addresses one of the core challenges in virtual studio environments—accurately tracking on-screen talent without relying on cumbersome tracking markers or beacons. This system was showcased at IBC, highlighting its ability to track the position of talent in real-time within green-screen studios, providing unprecedented accuracy in virtual and augmented reality settings.
The system operates using two or more tracking cameras and advanced data processing units, all synchronized via a calibration system. These cameras perform both skeleton and depth tracking, enabling talent to move naturally and freely through virtual environments while interacting with AR elements. As Salih Junuzovic, stYpe’s Sales Director, explained, “AI Glue extends the versatility of all other systems in the stYpe portfolio, including RedSpy, Follower, and StypeKit. It allows seamless interactions between the talent and virtual graphics, without the need for active or passive beacons.”
AI Glue can cover a 4×4 meter tracking area, with the ability to expand coverage using additional sensors. Its standout feature is its ability to track multiple individuals simultaneously, offering dynamic interactions with AR elements. Additionally, the system can operate with a fixed-shot camera, allowing for flexibility in both studio and live production environments.
StypeCentral: next-generation graphics control
The StypeCentral system also made its debut at IBC 2024, positioning itself as a next-gen solution for graphics playout in both live and recorded studio settings. This web-based interface integrates seamlessly with MOS protocol-compliant newsroom systems like Avid iNews and Octopus, streamlining the management of real-time graphics in fast-paced production environments.
Designed to meet the increasing demands for precision in live news and studio production, StypeCentral offers a playlist-based template workflow that simplifies the creation, management, and playout of graphics, player statistics, and other dynamic elements. With its intuitive design, producers can manage graphics effortlessly, ensuring the right visuals appear at the exact moment needed.
One of the most significant early adopters of this system is Radio Television Serbia (RTS), which employed StypeCentral for its coverage of UEFA EURO 2024 and the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. By integrating the system into RTS’ existing newsroom workflow, stYpe enabled producers to elevate their broadcasts, transforming a small studio into a massive virtual stadium with immersive real-time graphics overlays.
GreenKiller and RedSpy
Adding to its portfolio, stYpe also showcased GreenKiller, a powerful chroma keying solution built on Unreal Engine, and RedSpy, their acclaimed camera tracking system. GreenKiller differentiates subtle color nuances on a green screen cyclorama, preserving real-world shadows in virtual environments. Junuzovic emphasized the product’s versatility, stating, “With GreenKiller, you can transform your green screen into anything you like, making your competitors green with envy.”
The deployment of RedSpy camera tracking across three RTS studios further enhanced the realism of the broadcast by ensuring smooth and precise camera movements within the virtual space. RedSpy is integral to creating a natural, seamless VR/AR experience, as it allows for dynamic shots from any angle within the studio, a feature stYpe calls Virtual Move.
