T-Mobile and SpaceX collaborate to launch Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capabilities

In a significant development, T-Mobile has announced the successful launch of the first Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capabilities using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. This marks a major step in the strategic partnership between Starlink and T-Mobile, with plans unveiled last year to introduce SMS solutions in 2024, followed by voice, data, and IoT services in 2025.

The collaboration allows T-Mobile to grant Starlink access to its 5G spectrum, enabling Starlink to leverage the vast coverage of the T-Mobile network. This partnership aims to address connectivity challenges in over half a million square miles of the US and expansive ocean areas that remain unreachable by traditional terrestrial networks due to terrain limitations and land-use restrictions.

Mike Katz, President of Marketing, Strategy, and Products at T-Mobile, emphasized the company’s commitment to connecting customers globally, stating, “Our mission is to be the best in the world at connecting customers to their world, and today is another step forward in keeping our customers connected even in the most remote locations for added peace of mind when they need it most.”

The primary objective of this new service is to eliminate mobile dead zones and reduce reliance on expensive satellite phones. With T-Mobile’s support, Starlink aims to provide near ubiquitous coverage across the United States.

Five wireless providers, including KDDI (Japan), Optus (Australia), One NZ (New Zealand), Rogers (Canada), and Salt (Switzerland), have already joined the initiative to launch Direct-to-Cell technology. T-Mobile confirmed that additional operators are planning to join the partnership in the near future.

T-Mobile sees this collaboration as a pivotal moment in their alliance with SpaceX and global partners, aiming to eradicate dead zones and enhance connectivity worldwide. With the successful deployment of satellites into low-Earth orbit, field testing for the new service is expected to commence soon, marking a significant advancement in telecommunications technology.
