Barcelona hosts the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) 2026 Technology & Innovation Summit on 18 and 19 June. The event brings together leading technology executives from Europe’s public media organisations to share knowledge, strengthen collaboration and discuss the challenges that will shape the future of the audiovisual sector, according to a statement released by RTVE.
Hosted by RTVE, with RTVE Catalunya acting as the local organiser, the event is taking place at the INEFC building in Barcelona. The summit brings together around 130 professionals from 33 countries, representing the main public broadcasters that are members of the EBU.
Brian Wynne, Head of Technology Infrastructure at RTÉ, has been elected Chair of the new Technical Committee (TC), taking over from Michael Eberhard, Chief Technology Officer at ARD/SWR, who led the TC from 2024 to 2026.
On the other hand, Simon Tuff, from the BBC, and Sasha Schwoll, from SWR/ARD, were elected as Vice-Chairs.
Michael Eberhard, shares: “We have, in two years of rapid change, begun to align the membership around a new vision and platform, shifted the focus to new activities, and put the work on new rails. I wish the newly elected TC the tenacity and courage to continue to push on the big challenges we are unique placed to address, including on cloud, data, and AI, which will impact us all massively. Let’s continue to shape our future together!”
Additionally, the summit also includes the 32nd EBU Technical Assembly, during which the organisation’s Technical Committee members have been renewed. RTVE will continue to be represented by Víctor Sánchez, Director of Operations and Media at TVE, who has been appointed as a member of the EBU Technical Committee for the next two years.
Víctor Sánchez highlighted the importance for RTVE of continuing to have a presence on the EBU Technical Committee: “We are currently addressing major technological challenges such as AI, IP and workflow transformation. It is essential to maintain a position within Europe in order to influence how technology evolves across public broadcasters”.
The two-day event features presentations, working sessions and networking opportunities focused on technological innovation, digital transformation and cooperation between public service media organisations. Its aim is to strengthen Barcelona’s role as a key meeting point for discussion on the future of the European audiovisual industry.
