Cannes Film Festival jury revealed, honoring technical excellence

As the 77th Cannes Film Festival approaches, set to run from May 14th to May 25th, the official jury for the feature film competition has been revealed, featuring esteemed filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona from Spain.

Joining the director of “The Impossible” on the Cannes 2024 official jury, presided over by American director, screenwriter, and actress Greta Gerwig, are Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan; American actress Lily Gladstone; French actress Eva Green; Lebanese director and screenwriter Nadine Labaki; Italian actor Pierfrancisco Favino; Japanese director Hirokazu Kore eda; and French actor and producer Omar Sy.

Moreover, navigating through the exceptional talent behind films in the Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival to recognize technical brilliance is no small feat. The CST – Higher Technical Commission for Image and Sound – rises to the challenge by assembling esteemed professionals from various disciplines to form its two juries, tasked with awarding:

• The CST Award for Best Artist-Technician
• The CST Award for Best Young Female Film Technician.

Heading the jury for the CST Award for Best Artist-Technician are luminaries such as director and screenwriter Jean Achache, editor Ariane Beoglin-Levent, Maud Boissac, head of cultural affairs for the city of Cannes, economics and cinema expert Jean-Marie Dura, Director of Photography Agnès Godard, and head sound engineer Yves-Marie Omnes.
The jury for the CST Award for Best Young Female Film Technician is led by director Gérard Krawczyk and sound editor Nadine Muse.

Who will succeed Johnnie Burn, recipient of the CST award for best artist-technician for his outstanding work as sound designer on Jonathan Glazer’s film, “Zone of Interest,” which also earned him an Oscar for best sound?
Who will follow in the footsteps of Anne-Sophie Delseries, honored with the CST award for best young female film technician for her exceptional work as Head Decorator on Anna Novion’s film, “Le Théorème de Marguerite”?

The esteemed jury will have the honor of awarding the Palme d’Or to one of the 22 films in the official competition. The winners will be announced on Saturday, May 25th, at the closing ceremony of the French festival.

“I love movies, I love making them, I love watching them, I love talking about them. As a cinephile, Cannes has always been the epitome of what the universal language of cinema can be. A dark cinema hall to watch a movie is my favorite place. I am amazed, excited, and honored to be the next president of the Cannes Film Festival jury,” confessed Greta Gerwig late last year upon learning of her appointment as jury president.

This year, Spanish films will not be featured in the Official Selection of the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Alongside Bayona’s presence, the most notable Spanish presence at Cannes is Rodrigo Sorogoyen, who will preside over the jury of the 63rd edition of Critics’ Week. Additionally, Jonas Trueba’s eighth feature film, “Volveréis,” will have its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight 2024.
