Channel 4 partners with CNN for historic 2024 US election coverage

Channel 4 launches transformation strategy with plans to cut 340 roles

Channel 4 is set to make broadcast history with its first-ever overnight coverage of a United States presidential election since 1992. In a groundbreaking collaboration with CNN, the live broadcast America Decides: US Election Results (w/t) will offer unparalleled analysis, data, and expert commentary throughout the night on November 5th. Produced by ITN Productions, this eight-hour live event promises to deliver a high-caliber lineup of international presenters and guests, bringing in-depth coverage of what may be one of the most consequential elections in modern history.

Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Channel 4 News anchor, and Emily Maitlis, co-presenter of The News Agents podcast, will helm the broadcast from Washington, D.C., following up on their critically acclaimed coverage of the 2024 UK general election. This election special, airing from 10:15 pm, marks the first time Channel 4 has partnered with CNN, tapping into the network’s expertise, data resources, and graphics technology.

Jeremy Vine, making his Channel 4 election debut, will anchor a data hub from London, using advanced infographics to break down the all-important results from battleground states. Known for his ability to simplify complex data, Vine promises to provide viewers with key insights as results are declared.

Channel 4 News’ Matt Frei, a veteran journalist and former Washington correspondent, will bring his expertise to the overnight coverage. Frei, who has spent decades covering U.S. politics, will report from key swing states, joined by a team of correspondents on the ground, ensuring comprehensive, real-time updates.

The program will feature exclusive guests representing diverse perspectives from the American political landscape. Among the high-profile figures appearing in the Washington studio are Stormy Daniels, at the center of Donald Trump’s ‘hush-money’ trial, and Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer. Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and ex-Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will also offer their insights, along with a range of other notable personalities, including Republican supporter Caitlyn Jenner, pollster Frank Lutz, political strategist James Carville, and actor Brian Cox, star of Succession. Throughout the night, both Democrat and Republican politicians will join the discussion, providing balanced, insightful commentary on the unfolding election.

Channel 4’s partnership with CNN will allow for a dynamic blend of resources, including the sharing of guests, reporters, and data. CNN’s chief national correspondent John King, famous for his “Magic Wall” technology, will provide live updates and analysis, simulcast for Channel 4 viewers.

Louisa Compton, Channel 4’s Head of News and Current Affairs, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “Following the success of our UK election coverage, we are thrilled to bring Channel 4 viewers what will undoubtedly be the most comprehensive coverage of the American election. The consequences of this election will be felt around the globe, and we aim to capture all the drama, backed by expert analysis, a stellar guest lineup, and our groundbreaking partnership with CNN.”

Ian Rumsey, Managing Director of Content at ITN, added: “Our team is ready to deliver another program full of drama and depth. The blend of presenters and exclusive guests will ensure we provide the sharpest analysis and most compelling conversations throughout the night.”

Krishnan Guru-Murthy, who has covered numerous global events, remarked: “With so much of the world facing crises, this is the most significant US election of our lifetimes. We aim to offer a lively, intelligent, and insightful conversation that viewers won’t want to miss.”

Emily Maitlis shared similar sentiments: “Whatever happens on November 5th, it will be a story that grips the world. I’m thrilled to be back with Krishnan and the Channel 4 team, bringing audiences in-depth analysis and top-notch guests.”

Channel 4’s comprehensive coverage will not only air live on television but also be available to stream in full on the broadcaster’s YouTube, TikTok, and streaming platforms, ensuring maximum accessibility for viewers across the globe. As Jeremy Vine noted, “It’s a massive night for America and the world, and Channel 4 will be the place to watch as the results unfold.”

With this bold approach to US election coverage, Channel 4 is poised to set a new standard for international political broadcasting, delivering a blend of rigorous analysis, exclusive insights, and compelling conversation.
