Lawo has announced the release of its Virtual Sound Card (VSC) for macOS 14 (Sonoma) and later versions, expanding the capabilities of Apple desktops and laptops for professional audio workflows. This new virtual audio device allows seamless integration into RAVENNA/AES67 Audio-over-IP (AoIP) networks, which are increasingly prevalent in broadcast and studio environments.
Lawo’s VSC comes in two versions: a free version offering basic functionality and a licensed version packed with advanced features designed for high-performance broadcast and studio applications. The free version, available for immediate download, includes one virtual audio device with two channels—ideal for users looking to connect their macOS systems to AoIP networks in simpler setups.
For those needing more robust solutions, the licensed version significantly enhances audio handling capabilities. It supports up to 128 virtual audio devices, 128 simultaneous senders and receivers, and offers sampling rates up to 96kHz. In addition, it provides features such as PTP (Precision Time Protocol) synchronization for accurate timing, multicast and unicast streaming, and full compliance with key industry standards like SMPTE ST2110 and ST2022-7, ensuring redundancy and reliability for critical operations.
One of the major advantages of Lawo VSC is its compatibility with Lawo HOME, the company’s centralized management platform. With Lawo HOME, users can easily discover and manage devices on the network through protocols like mDNS and SAP, making setup and control more efficient for complex audio infrastructures.
Lawo VSC operates as a background service, converting local audio into RAVENNA/AES67 streams that are fully compliant with open AoIP standards, providing broadcasters and studio engineers with the flexibility and scalability required in modern media production environments.
