QuickLink enhances remote production for ITV studios’ Saturday Night Takeaway

QuickLink has played a pivotal role in addressing the technical challenges of ITV Studios’ hit show Saturday Night Takeaway. With QuickLink’s StudioEdge™ and StudioCall™ solutions, the show has been able to elevate its remote production segments, ensuring a seamless and high-quality experience for both viewers and production teams.

As the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster, ITV Studios is home to a wide range of successful television formats. Within its portfolio, Lifted Entertainment—a division of ITV Studios—produces over 500 hours of content annually for UK audiences. This includes renowned programs such as The Voice, Countdown, University Challenge, and the much-loved Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

Saturday Night Takeaway is a high-profile, family-oriented entertainment show that spans seven weeks of live broadcasts each season. Its complex production involves a mix of live and pre-recorded segments, including interactive games and surprise elements that often involve real-time participation from viewers, such as children and families facing health challenges.

Evolving remote production needs

Initially, Saturday Night Takeaway relied on basic setups involving laptops and webcams to connect with remote participants from across the UK. However, as the show’s scale and technical requirements grew, Lifted Entertainment sought a more advanced solution to enhance the audio and video quality of these remote segments. This is where QuickLink’s technology came into play.

To streamline the production, Lifted Entertainment replaced its previous equipment with QuickLink’s integrated hardware, enabling a more efficient, end-to-end solution. By introducing QuickLink hardware at remote locations, the need for laptops and video capture cards was eliminated, offering greater flexibility and control over the incoming feeds. At the production hub, QuickLink StudioEdge™ became the central platform for managing video calls, including popular services like Teams and Zoom. However, ITV opted to use StudioCall—a built-in feature of StudioEdge—due to its ease of use and seamless integration.

A true end-to-end solution

The transition to QuickLink technology significantly improved the workflow for Saturday Night Takeaway, providing the production team with full control over remote feeds from start to finish. David Williams, Technical Director at Lifted Entertainment, highlighted the benefits: “Using QuickLink hardware both out on location and in the studio enabled us to have a true end-to-end solution. Monitoring and managing all connections from the QuickLink web UI allowed us to quickly troubleshoot issues and ensure every segment went smoothly, from Ring My Bell to Singalong Live.”

The web-based interface allowed ITV Studios to oversee every remote connection in real time, reducing troubleshooting time and ensuring the technical smoothness of complex segments—key to the show’s success.

Key to handling Saturday Night Takeaway’s scale

With Saturday Night Takeaway attracting between five and nine million viewers per episode during its prime-time weekend slot, the technical demands are immense. Each episode features multiple live remote connections, surprising members of the public across various segments of the show. QuickLink’s technology has proven indispensable in handling these connections with reliability and precision.

Leon Langdale, Technical Producer at Lifted Entertainment, emphasized the importance of QuickLink in managing the show’s ambitious scale: “QuickLink is the perfect solution for our hugely demanding remote production environment. There is no other program on television with the size and scale that Saturday Night Takeaway has. The technical demands of the format grow each series, and we simply couldn’t make it without a key partner in QuickLink.”

According to the information released by the company, QuickLink’s solutions have not only improved the efficiency of the production but also helped ITV Studios deliver top-tier audio and video quality for remote interactions, ensuring that Saturday Night Takeaway maintains its reputation as one of the UK’s most technically sophisticated live entertainment shows.
