SailGP, known for its cutting-edge technology and thrilling water racing, has unveiled plans to extend the reach of its innovative production tool, LiveLineFX, beyond the realm of sailing.
This in-house broadcast graphics package, integral to SailGP’s narrative and accessibility, has played a pivotal role in expanding the championship’s global audience. Recognized with awards, including an Emmy, LiveLineFX has cemented SailGP’s status as a pioneer in sports innovation.
Operating remotely from SailGP’s London studio, LiveLineFX services broadcast partners across 212 territories, processing an astounding 1.15 billion data requests per hour from each of the ten state-of-the-art F50 catamarans. Utilizing Oracle Cloud, the system delivers real-time performance insights.
LiveLineFX harnesses data from 125 sensors on each F50, capturing boat speed, direction, weather conditions, and sea currents. This data is translated into graphical overlays, enriching the viewer experience and offering crucial insights into the race dynamics.
Powered by live racecourse video, high-accuracy GPS, and Oracle Cloud, LiveLineFX achieves great accuracy, tracking boats within two-centimeter precision and seamlessly integrating graphical overlays of race markers, boundary lines, and performance statistics. Beyond sailing, LiveLineFX’s versatility extends to various out-of-stadium sports, including cycling, horse racing, and surfing, offering enhanced viewer comprehension amidst dynamic events.
Warren Jones, SailGP’s Chief Technology Officer, remarked, “LiveLineFX represents SailGP’s commitment to immersive media technologies. Developed with versatility in mind, it’s poised to revolutionize viewing experiences across multiple sports.”
The solution has not only fueled SailGP’s audience growth but also its commercial success. With an average of 14 million broadcast viewers per event and a 300% audience surge in the past year, SailGP has leveraged LiveLineFX to offer dynamic advertising opportunities, reducing reliance on traditional physical branding infrastructure.
Melissa Lawton, SailGP’s Chief Content Officer, emphasized LiveLineFX’s role in audience expansion and engagement. “LiveLineFX’s capabilities have sparked interest from other sports properties seeking to enhance their fan engagement strategies,” Lawton added.
In addition to its technological advancements, SailGP recently debuted a refreshed opening title sequence and soundtrack aimed at captivating new and younger audiences.
According to the race administrators, as SailGP Season 4 approaches its conclusion, with events in Halifax, Canada, and New York, followed by the Grand Final in San Francisco, the championship’s commitment to innovation and audience engagement remains steadfast.
