DIT Kevin Shiramizu navigates on-set challenges with AJA Kumo 3232-12G and mini-converters

Digital Imaging Technicians (DITs) play a crucial role on set, troubleshooting a range of issues from imaging sensors to signal paths.

Managing these tasks while ensuring alignment with the director of photography’s vision requires a well-equipped DIT cart. For Kevin Shiramizu, integrating an AJA Kumo 3232-12G router and various AJA Mini-Converters into his cart has proven instrumental in handling unexpected situations. This setup offers ample ins and outs, supporting 4K HDR live grading and monitoring requirements on set, while also facilitating seamless transitions between equipment and display formats.

Primarily involved in commercial productions, Shiramizu emphasizes the ever-changing nature of his projects, presenting continual challenges. His DIT cart, weighing several hundred pounds, houses a computer for live grading technology, monitors, and the video signal path from the camera. This comprehensive setup, which includes LUT boxes and the Kumo router, ensures efficient distribution to various monitors and remote clients.

As productions become more intricate and demand increased access to live monitoring, Shiramizu underscores the importance of having sufficient ins and outs. The flexibility and reliability of the Kumo router have been crucial, with seamless software integration from AJA and Pomfort enhancing the live grading process. Shiramizu values the 32 ins and outs provided by Kumo. He also appreciates that AJA Mini-Converters address conversion needs for different devices on set.

Beyond wireless signal conversion, Shiramizu relies on AJA Mini-Converters for various on-set demands, including monitoring iPhone, GoPro, Sony SLR cam, and other capture devices. He trusts the reliability of AJA gear, especially as the industry shifts towards 4K HDR monitoring and wider adoption of 12G-SDI on set. Looking ahead, Shiramizu is considering integrating AJA ColorBox into his cart for color space and HDR format conversions, anticipating further enhancements to his workflow.
