SVT sets new standard in sustainable TV production with Ateliere Live technology

Swedish national broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) has taken a significant leap toward sustainable broadcasting with its innovative use of Ateliere Live for the production of the popular show, The Great Moose Migration. This shift has allowed SVT to dramatically reduce both environmental impact and production costs, all while maintaining the high-quality output that the show’s audience expects. The announcement, made by Ateliere Creative Technologies, highlights the role of NVIDIA’s cutting-edge GPU technology in transforming the live TV production landscape.

The Great Moose Migration, known for its slow-TV format, has been a viewer favorite since its launch in 2019, streaming non-stop for over 500 hours each season as it follows a herd of moose through their traditional migration routes. Historically, the production required a large on-site crew and significant resources to manage 40 robotic cameras in remote wilderness settings. However, this year, SVT has completely overhauled its approach by implementing Ateliere Live’s remote production workflow, achieving unprecedented sustainability.

Dennis Buhr, Head of Production Development at SVT, explained the impact: “Producing The Great Moose Migration required substantial equipment and a team of 5-6 people stationed in the woods for the entire production. With Ateliere Live, we’ve been able to eliminate the need for on-site staff, drastically reducing both costs and our environmental footprint. This internet-based approach ensures that we maintain the same quality viewing experience while adopting a more sustainable model for the future.”

Ateliere Live leverages the powerful NVIDIA RTX 4000 Ada Generation GPU, streamlining the production workflow and reducing costs by over 50%. By minimizing the physical presence of production teams and decreasing the need for repeated encoding and decoding, the show’s carbon footprint has been slashed by up to 70%, according to early estimates. The integration of GPU processing throughout the entire workflow allows video to remain within the GPU from reception at remote locations until just before distribution, drastically reducing the energy required for live broadcasting.

Andy Hooper, SVP of Live Products at Ateliere, emphasized the importance of sustainability: “It’s an honor to be part of such a unique production where the goal is to protect the environment being showcased. With Ateliere Live’s advanced GPU technology and remote proxy capabilities, we’ve cut costs and achieved a level of sustainability that traditional methods simply can’t match.”

SVT’s production team can now monitor the show’s video feeds from over 650 kilometers away at their main broadcasting facility, thanks to the efficient use of solar-powered equipment and advanced compression technology, which ensures high-quality footage without disturbing wildlife.

Beyond The Great Moose Migration, SVT is committed to a broader digital transformation with its Project Neo initiative, which seeks to modernize the network’s operations. By moving toward standard IT hardware and sustainable production methods, SVT is leading the charge in eco-friendly broadcasting. Ateliere Live and NVIDIA GPUs are central to this shift, providing a scalable solution for media companies looking to adapt to hybrid and remote production models.
