MPEG-5 LCEVC showcase at NAB 2024: illustrating ecosystem growth and deployment readiness

Held at the Convention Center, West Hall, Booths W3454 and W3455

The latest installment of the MPEG-5 LCEVC (Low Complexity Enhancement Video Coding) Showcase, taking place at NAB (April 14-18, 2024, Las Vegas), returns with a compelling display of LCEVC-based applications spanning broadcast, pay TV, streaming, extended reality (XR), cloud gaming, pixel-streaming, and beyond.

This showcase spotlights an expanding array of LCEVC-enabled products from a diverse ecosystem of industry vendors and prominent open-source projects. The featured products and projects, outlined on the LCEVC Showcase website, offer demonstrations of end-to-end systems tailored for streaming and broadcast applications. Attendees can witness LCEVC in action on commercially available encoders, seamlessly decoded on widely utilized mobile devices, web browsers, and within the chipsets powering TVs and set-top boxes.

For the first time in NAB history, the showcase will unite TV and set-top box manufacturers poised for the deployment of Brazil’s next-generation digital TV standard, TV3.0. Following pivotal demonstrations during the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Brazilian Carnival, this showcase will preview several components slated for the upcoming trials during the Paris Olympics. These trials aim to broadcast the first high-dynamic range (HDR) 4K LCEVC-enhanced VVC channel over DASH ROUTE. Fabio Murra, SVP Product and Marketing at V-Nova, will deliver a presentation titled “Shaping the future of television: Brazil’s journey to TV 3.0 and the Paris Olympics live broadcast trials,” on Sunday, April 14th, at 2:30 PM in the Tech Chat Theater, West Hall. Murra’s presentation will illuminate the trial’s preparation and objectives, offering insights into the collaborative efforts of multiple technology companies in building an ecosystem for next-generation TV broadcast services.

The pixel-streaming pod, empowered by NVIDIA technology, will exemplify LCEVC’s unique scalability for ultra-low-latency pixel streaming applications, notably cloud gaming and immersive 6DoF entertainment, driven by V-Nova PresenZ. Content will be rendered and encoded in real-time on NVIDIA GPUs using LCEVC, then streamed in ultra-low latency to a head-mounted display (HMD). Gianluca Meardi, General Manager of V-Nova Studios Business Unit, will present “Breaking Boundaries in XR: Introducing PresenZ 6DoF by V-Nova Studios” on Monday, April 15th, at 2:30 PM, also in the Tech Chat Theater, West Hall. This presentation will spotlight PresenZ’s transformative potential in virtual reality storytelling, offering cinematic photorealism coupled with six degrees of freedom.

Lastly, Kyber, the latest open-source project within the VideoLAN ecosystem, will make its debut at the LCEVC showcase. Jean-Baptiste Kempf, President of VideoLAN, expressed excitement about the opportunity to showcase Kyber within the context of expanding applications enabled by new technologies. Kyber, an open-source, cross-platform application and SDK, designed to control any type of machine irrespective of hardware and OS, will demonstrate upcoming LCEVC support, highlighting its role in web streaming platforms alongside FFmpeg.

Guido Meardi, CEO of V-Nova, expressed his admiration for the strides in LCEVC adoption showcased at the event. He emphasized the expanding LCEVC ecosystem’s accessibility and utility across various media and entertainment applications, including support on TVs and set-top boxes. Meardi also highlighted the significance of the new pixel-streaming pod, developed in collaboration with NVIDIA, in distributing new content and entertainment formats at scale using V-Nova PresenZ and LCEVC technologies. He underscored the collaborative nature of the showcase, emphasizing its role in actively shaping the future of digital media technology.
