RED Digital Cinema® is set to debut its latest cine-broadcast technology at the 2024 International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam from September 13-16. Attendees can visit RED at booths 8.MS14 and 11.C28 to explore the large-format global shutter V-Raptor XL [X] and V-Raptor [X] cinema cameras, alongside the introduction of the new RED Cine-Broadcast Module, designed specifically for live event and broadcast production.
“RED is proud to be at the forefront of global shutter technology,” said Keiji Oishi, CEO of RED Digital Cinema. “We are excited to bring our advancements to IBC and showcase how we’re shaping the future of visual storytelling. Our new technology pushes the boundaries of image capture, bringing the iconic RED cinematic look to the broadcast world.”
Enhanced image capture
The V-Raptor [X] and V-Raptor XL [X] cameras, equipped with large-format global shutter sensors, provide a revolutionary solution for capturing the most natural and organic imagery. The cameras’ “Extended Highlights” mode enhances colors and details in extreme lighting situations, allowing for smoother highlight roll-off. With over 20 stops of dynamic range, the V-Raptor systems are ideal for low-light environments, ensuring high fidelity and accurate color reproduction.
Both camera systems also feature RED’s Phantom Track dual-capture technology, simplifying virtual production setups using GhostFrame™ or frame-remapping. This technology enables the simultaneous capture of two distinct scenes (R3D clips) with a single camera, while also supporting live monitoring on set.
New RED Cine-Broadcast Module for Live Productions
RED’s new Cine-Broadcast Module, compatible with the V-Raptor [X], V-Raptor XL[X], and standard V-Raptor systems, is designed to meet the demands of live broadcast and event production. The module supports up to two channels of 4K 60P (HDR/SDR) over 12G-SDI and is IP-broadcast ready with SMPTE ST 2110 (TR-08) and a 4K 60P JPEG-XS feed. Its LEMO SMPTE 311M/304M hybrid fiber optic cable connector allows seamless connectivity with rack-mountable base stations.
For broadcasters, RED Connect offers advanced workflows, including slow-motion, AI/ML augmentation, and live-to-headset experiences using 8K 120FPS R3Ds. This feature unlocks the full potential of RED’s high-end cameras for real-time production.
Broadcast-optimized color workflow
RED’s new Broadcast Color pipeline is a new feature for the DSMC3 camera lineup. It enables live color adjustments and multi-camera color matching for broadcast and streaming environments. This real-time control is possible through industry-standard remote control panels (RCPs), providing on-demand fine-tuning while capturing metadata per frame. The functionality comes as a standard firmware update for all V-Raptor and V-Raptor XL variants.
