Sony expands DWX wireless microphone series with simplified operation and built-in recording

Sony adds new products to its DWX wireless microphone series

Sony has introduced the DWT-B40 bodypack transmitter and the DWR-R40Q rack-mount receiver, the latest additions to its DWX digital wireless microphone series. The two products are designed to simplify operation while maintaining reliable wireless transmission, according to the company.

Both models are expected to be available in February 2027.

Traditionally, setting frequencies on wireless microphones has required specialist knowledge and complex procedures. The fourth generation of the DWX series aims to simplify channel configuration and pairing through a more straightforward operating process.

The new series features improved RF stability and long-range audio transmission. The DWT-B40 also introduces built-in audio recording for the first time in the series, allowing backup recordings to be made directly on the transmitter.

“Wireless audio has traditionally been an area where achieving reliable results can require a high level of technical expertise. With the fourth generation of our DWX series, we are making advanced wireless technology more intuitive and accessible, without compromising the reliability professional users expect,” said Markus Warlich, Head of Professional Audio at Sony Europe.

“The DWT-B40 and DWR-R40Q combine straightforward operation with robust transmission performance, while the DWT-B40’s built-in backup recording provides additional reassurance for productions where capturing every moment is essential,” he added.

Key features of the DWX series

Transmission

Improved resistance to interference and low-noise RF output waveforms are designed to support stable operation, even in challenging RF environments.

The DWT-B40 supports a maximum transmission power of 50 mW, depending on the region, enabling long-range audio transmission without an external power supply. It can also operate at high transmission power in environments that require extended range.

The transmitter offers flexible audio transmission options for different production requirements, ranging from settings that prioritise high sound quality and low latency to modes optimised for greater transmission reliability in demanding broadcast and sports environments.

The DWR-R40Q uses high-performance RF technology in its receiver circuitry to improve transmission stability and maintain reliable performance in congested RF environments. Its four-antenna diversity mode further enhances stability.

Configuration

The series allows users to configure frequencies and pair four channels with just a few button presses, simplifying operation and enabling users to start recording quickly.

The DWT-B40 supports power via rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, sold separately, or USB. Condenser microphones can be connected directly to the transmitter, which also provides +48 V phantom power.

The DWR-R40Q supports four-channel diversity reception in a 1U rack-mount format. It also features four audio output ports compatible with Dante, alongside analogue XLR connections for conventional workflows.

32-bit float internal recording on the DWT-B40

The DWT-B40’s 32-bit float internal recording provides a backup in the event of a wireless signal interruption. The format is designed to help prevent distortion across a wide range of gain levels.

Recording can be started directly using the REC button or remotely from the receiver via Cross Remote control. Timecode synchronisation also streamlines post-production workflows.
