RefCam has become part of LaLiga’s technical broadcast setup. First used during the Copa del Rey final, this technology has now also been integrated into matches in Spanish football’s top flight. Its debut in the league took place during the match between FC Barcelona and RC Celta de Vigo.
This addition has made it possible to show the referee’s perspective during the game. The main referee for the match was José Luis Munuera, assisted by Antonio Ramón Martínez and Adrián Díaz. Through RefCam, viewers were able to get a closer look at key moments such as Pablo Durán’s fall, Lamine Yamal’s penalty, and the yellow card shown to Eric García, among others.
In a video shared by LaLiga on social media, the camera setup used in broadcasts can be seen, along with the new narrative angle it provides.
RefCam
RefCam consists of a camera integrated into the referee’s headband, offering a real-time view from the official’s perspective throughout the match.
The system also includes audio, aiming to improve understanding of refereeing decisions and provide greater transparency and closeness for fans.
Technology
For this innovation, LaLiga has selected technology developed by MindFly. After testing in competition, the solution has stood out for its image quality, stability, and reliability under high-mobility conditions.
The system is designed to ensure a stable, high-quality signal through a connectivity model using antennas distributed around the stadium, transmitting the feed to the production unit. The camera also delivers accurate colour reproduction and image stabilisation.
